Sunday brings Latin Festival Easton back to Riverside Park, the Lehigh Valley Zoo hosts its fall wine festival next Saturday, and the Catasauqua school board fills a seat while Sheckler Elementary lines up picture day. Here is what is happening in and around Catasauqua and North Catasauqua this week, the latest from the Catasauqua Area School District, and a few good places to eat while you are in town.

Local News and Community Happenings

The biggest project on the borough's radar remains the Crane Iron Works redevelopment along the river, and it comes with a small traffic note this week: parking restrictions on Front Street continue while geotechnical test borings are done for the retaining wall work tied to that project. If you usually park on the river side of Front Street, check the signage before you leave the car. The two-way traffic conversion on Front and Second Streets is already in place as part of the same redevelopment, so give the new pattern a beat the first time you drive that block.

Over in North Catasauqua, the borough is promoting its Hometown Heroes Banner Program again this fall, a recognition program for residents who served in the U.S. armed forces, with banners displayed along the borough's streets; the news page and website at northcatasauqua.org have the details on how families can take part. And the North Catasauqua Police Department completed its Project Lifesaver recertification training earlier this month, according to borough news, keeping the tracking program that helps locate residents who wander current and ready.

At the Catasauqua Area School District

Some fresh news out of the district this week: the board of education filled a vacant seat earlier this month, according to district news, and Sheckler Elementary's school picture day is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, the day before the district's all-building early dismissal on Wednesday, September 23. On early-dismissal days Sheckler lets out at 1:30 p.m., so families can plan that pickup.

Fall sports remain in full swing under the Rough Riders banner. The varsity football team is back on the road Thursday, September 24, for a Colonial League game at Notre Dame-Green Pond with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Game dates, times, and any changes are posted on the district's athletics pages, so check there before heading to the field.

Things to Do in the Area

The weekend centers on the river and on Easton's neighborhoods. On Sunday, September 20, Latin Festival Easton returns to Riverside Park in downtown Easton from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., a free day of Latin music, food, and dance with an artisan marketplace, a short drive down Route 22 from Catasauqua. The day before, Saturday, September 19, the South Side Edible Walkway Parade and Picnic takes place around 900 Packer Street in Easton's South Side. And if you can get out tonight, Hispanic Heritage Day at Easton's West Ward Market runs 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a cooking class, salsa and merengue lessons, live music, and $3 taco specials from Amigos Mexican Grille.

Looking a little further out, the Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville hosts its Fall Wine Festival on Saturday, September 26, and Easton's College Hill neighborhood follows with Porchfest on Sunday, September 27, when porches across the neighborhood host free concerts. Then October kicks off in Bethlehem with OktoBERFEST at SteelStacks, running October 2 through 4 and again October 9 through 11, a free German-style festival that includes dachshund races.

Good Places to Eat Nearby

This week's pick is Grove Street Pub and Grill at 1092 Howertown Road in Catasauqua, a neighborhood pub and grill that calls itself "Your Neighborhood Place" and comes with a patio. It is a fitting name for anyone checking out the half twin at 514 Grove Street, which sits just a few minutes away. Call (610) 477-3305 or find the pub on Facebook for hours.

Also worth a stop nearby:

  • Whitehall Diner: a classic American breakfast and lunch spot at 3026 MacArthur Road in Whitehall, a short drive from Catasauqua. Call (610) 821-6880.
  • Rozana Mediterranean Restaurant and Banquet Hall: Mediterranean plates and a full banquet hall at 2678 Eberhart Road in Whitehall. See rozanabanquetrestaurant.com.

Where to Confirm What Is On

Event dates and times can change, so confirm details directly before you go. The best local sources are the official Catasauqua and North Catasauqua borough sites, the Catasauqua Area School District site, and each event's own page.

A Note from the Home at 514 Grove Street

If you are spending time in North Catasauqua this fall, the move-in-ready half twin at 514 Grove St. is worth a look: three bedrooms, one full and one half bath, an all-brick exterior, a covered front porch, a full basement, and a detached one-car garage, with fresh paint, new carpeting, and newer replacement windows. Tim Tepes of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Cassidon Realty has listed it, and he would be glad to walk you through it while you are in the area.
